How Many Rotis Should You Eat to Lose Weight?

How many rotis you should eat per day for weight loss, based on your calorie target — with real numbers, not vague advice to "cut carbs."

There's no fixed "correct" number of rotis for weight loss — it depends entirely on your total daily calorie target and what else you're eating. Here's how to actually work it out instead of guessing.

Calories Per Roti

A standard medium roti (made with whole wheat atta, no added ghee) is roughly 70-80 calories and 2.5-3g of protein. Adding a teaspoon of ghee or butter brings that up to roughly 110-120 calories.

Why "Cut Out Rotis" Is the Wrong Framing

Weight loss comes down to total daily calories versus your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) — a roti isn't inherently fattening, it's simply a calorie-and-carb contribution that needs to fit within your overall target, the same as rice, oats, or any other carbohydrate source.

Working Out Your Roti Budget

If your daily calorie target is 1,500 and a typical day's dal, sabzi, protein source, and snacks account for roughly 1,000-1,100 calories, that leaves 400-500 calories of "carb budget" — which could reasonably be 4-6 rotis (without ghee) depending on the rest of your meals.

A Worked Example

Say your target is 1,600 kcal/day: breakfast (300 kcal), lunch dal+sabzi+protein (450 kcal), dinner protein+vegetables (350 kcal) — that's 1,100 kcal, leaving roughly 500 kcal for carbs across the day, which comfortably fits 5-6 plain rotis or a mix of rotis and rice.

Does Roti Type Matter?

Whole wheat rotis provide more fiber than refined-flour (maida) rotis, which can help with satiety during a calorie deficit, but the calorie difference between the two is relatively small — the fiber and micronutrient benefit is the bigger reason to prefer whole wheat, not a large calorie gap.

The Bottom Line

There's no universal "right number" of rotis for weight loss — calculate your total daily calorie target, account for the rest of your meals, and let the remaining carb budget tell you how many rotis actually fit. Cutting rotis to zero isn't necessary for most people to lose weight.

Calibrate calculates your exact daily calorie and carb budget automatically, so you can see precisely how many rotis fit your day.
