Whey Protein vs Paneer: Cost-per-Gram of Protein Compared

Whey protein vs paneer compared on cost-per-gram of protein — which is actually the more affordable way to hit your daily protein target in India.

Whey protein has a reputation for being an "expensive" way to hit your protein target compared to whole foods like paneer — the actual cost comparison is closer than most people assume, and sometimes favors whey.

Protein Content

Paneer provides roughly 18g of protein per 100g, while a standard whey scoop (~30-35g) provides roughly 20-25g of protein, depending on the brand and whether it's concentrate or isolate.

Working Out Cost-per-Gram

To compare fairly, divide the price of each product by its total protein content: paneer's price-per-kg divided by 180g total protein (in a full kg) gives you a cost-per-gram figure; a whey tub's price divided by (protein-per-scoop × number of scoops) gives the equivalent for whey. Depending on current paneer and whey pricing, these numbers often land closer together than expected, with mid-range whey brands sometimes coming out cheaper per gram of protein than fresh paneer.

Why This Surprises People

Paneer has a reputation as the "cheap, natural" protein source and whey as the "expensive, processed" one, but paneer's price fluctuates with milk and dairy costs, and quality whey brands have become considerably more price-competitive in the Indian market over the past few years — the assumption that paneer is always cheaper per gram of protein isn't reliably true anymore.

Beyond Cost: Other Factors to Weigh

Paneer brings calcium, is a whole food with a wider nutrient profile, and works well in cooked dishes, while whey is faster to prepare, easier to hit precise protein targets with, and doesn't add extra fat or calories the way full-fat paneer does. Neither is objectively "better" — they solve different problems.

A Practical Combined Approach

Using paneer for cooked meals where it fits naturally (curries, bhurji, tikka) and whey for quick top-ups (post-workout, or closing a protein gap late in the day) uses each for its actual strength rather than treating them as competing, mutually exclusive choices.

The Bottom Line

Don't assume paneer is automatically the cheaper protein source — calculate the actual cost-per-gram of protein for your specific local paneer price and your specific whey brand, since the gap has narrowed significantly and sometimes reverses in whey's favor.
